    Feedback and Reviews

Most online reviews of Belmont Village Senior Living St. Matthews are very positive. Dozens of reviews mention the cleanliness of the rooms and the overall beauty of the facilities. The community has drawn some negative feedback, however, primarily related to poor management. Whether you need additional care or you’re comfortable in an independent home, you can have greater peace of mind thanks to built-in emergency-response systems and medical alert pendants.

Much like Traditions at Beaumont, Anthology of Louisville gives older adults a way to enjoy nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

    FYI:

FYI: If you want to find more things to do as you age, check out our guide to activities for seniors!

Anthology of Louisville looks great from the outside, but it looks even better once you step through the front doors. The white-brick interiors complement the clean, modern decor and comfortable furniture. More importantly, the community is laid out to be easy to navigate for older adults with mobility issues or dementia, making it ideal for seniors who want to live in an upscale environment without feeling overwhelmed. Along with an on-site concierge, Anthology of Louisville offers transportation services, 24/7 emergency maintenance, landscaped walking paths, a beauty salon, and a community activity center.

    Types of Care

Like Belmont Village Senior Living St. Matthews, Anthology of Louisville offers only assisted living and memory care. Its assisted living provides the personal care that is specific to Kentucky and caters to residents who may have more complex medical requirements than those who just need standard assistance with ADLs. The memory care unit uses iN2L (It’s Never Too Late) senior technology to help residents enjoy telehealth services and remain socially engaged with friends and family. We appreciate the use of technology to keep residents connected and help prevent social isolation, a common issue for older adults.

    Feedback and Reviews

Anthology of Louisville has received exceptional reviews for nearly all of its offerings, from the cleanliness and layout of its facilities to the kind and caring staff. Many reviewers mention that the community feels very inviting and that residents look happy whenever they visit. One reviewer, however, claimed that the head of elder care was difficult to work with and the staff was not always willing to do more than the bare minimum.

All of these perks come at a cost. At first glance, Magnolia Springs East Louisville is not much more expensive than Anthology of Louisville or Eastern Star Home in Kentucky, but the starting price of $4,100 is for a semiprivate room and does not include all levels of care. If you want a private room at Magnolia Springs, starting prices are closer to $5,300. Magnolia Springs doesn’t offer as much pricing transparency as many other communities on this list, so you may need to begin the application process to know exactly how much it will cost.

    Types of Care

Like Anthology of Louisville, Magnolia Springs East Louisville offers assisted living and memory care. It also offers more enhanced assistance for residents transitioning between different levels of care, as well as those preparing for or recovering from surgery or illness. Making transitions like these can feel stressful or overwhelming, so we like to see these extra services offered. It may not have as many care options as Eastern Star Home in Kentucky, but Magnolia Springs still offers a range of care options and medical services for older adults.

    Feedback and Reviews

Magnolia Springs receives some of the best feedback of any community on this list. Residents and family members consistently praise the beautiful facilities, cheerful environment, and high quality of care. One reviewer, however, claimed that management attempted to evict his mother after he would not agree to hire a 24/7 babysitter to watch her.

It’s also a great place to call home for golf players and enthusiasts, since it’s a short distance from Wildwood Country Club and Woodhaven Country Club.

» Learn About: Active Senior Living Communities

Like Belmont Village and Vitality Living Springdale, Morning Pointe is a pet-friendly community. That helps encourage residents with pets — particularly dogs — to remain active and mobile. The community also offers a wide range of activities and social programs, from exercise classes and live entertainment to group outings and arts and crafts. Morning Pointe has all those perks while still being one of the more affordable assisted living communities in the city.

    Types of Care

Like Traditions of Beaumont and Eastern Star Home in Kentucky, Morning Pointe of Louisville is one of the few communities in the city to offer assisted living, memory care, and respite care. That makes it a great option for older adults who need assistance and may have a spouse or other caregiver who needs a break to rest and recuperate from time to time.

Morning Pointe offers personal care as a level of care distinct from its assisted living community. Specifically, Morning Pointe treats personal care as a way for residents to remain in an assisted living environment for longer without the need to move to a nursing home.

    Feedback and Reviews

Morning Pointe of Louisville gets a lot of positive feedback from residents, family members, and staff. Residents and family members often praise Morning Pointe for its caring staff and clean facilities. Several reviewers say the community has become a home away from home for their aging parents. One review talked about how the administrators went above and beyond to ensure that all of her mother’s belongings could be delivered and arranged in the room a few days before she arrived.

Not all reviews for Morning Pointe have been positive, however. Multiple reviews have criticized the lack of qualified staff and low-quality care for residents with more advanced needs. One reviewer claimed her grandmother was asked to leave the facility after experiencing a fall, while another claimed their family member was neglected after returning from the hospital.

    • Less than a 10-minute drive to downtown Louisville
    • Private and semiprivate rooms
    • Close to Cherokee Park

    Overview

Located near the Cave Hill Arboretum and Cherokee Park, Eastern Star Home in Kentucky has a great mix of city convenience and quick access to nature. It is the only community on this list that’s a stone’s throw from downtown Louisville, making it best for seniors who prefer a taste of city life. Residents can enjoy the shopping and attractions of the city without having to go very far to see green fields and parks.

Compared to luxury communities like Magnolia Springs East Louisville, Eastern Star Home in Kentucky does not offer a lot of amenities or a very high-end facility. That’s because it caters to residents who need greater assistance with ADLs and various medical conditions, which is why it boasts a high staff-to-resident ratio. It doesn’t have a resort-style atmosphere, but residents can still access amenities that make life easier, including a beauty salon, activity room, garden courtyard, on-site chapel, and lounge areas.

    Types of Care

Compared to most other assisted living communities in Louisville, Eastern Star Home is unique in the type of care it offers. The community is specifically designed for people who are recovering from illness or injury and require assisted living, personal care, memory care, intermediate care (skilled nursing), respite care, and palliative care.

The facility can manage both short- and long-term residents, with specialized care for wound management, diabetes, pulmonary conditions, and oncological recovery. That means there’s a good chance Eastern Star Home in Kentucky can help if you or a loved one have highly specific or complex medical needs.

    Feedback and Reviews

Eastern Star Home generally receives positive reviews, especially for the cleanliness of the facility and the caring nursing staff. Feedback is a bit more mixed than with other communities though. Some reviewers claimed that, despite the great nurses, some of the staff don’t want to do their jobs. There have also been reports of outdated plumbing and poor fire-suppression systems.

How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Louisville

As the largest city in Kentucky, Louisville is home to dozens of retirement and assisted living communities. We narrowed down our list using a few important factors.

  • Cost: The cost of assisted living in Louisville is much lower than the national average. Most communities in the city are affordable, but we focused on the ones that offer the best overall value to seniors.
  • Available care: All the communities on our list offer, at a minimum, assisted living and memory care. We tried to find communities that have additional options, such as housing for independent living, as well as respite care and even palliative care.
  • Reviews: Reviews allow us to get a sneak peek into each community and understand the highs and lows for residents, family members, and staff. We cannot report information from every review, but we considered common themes and used that information to find the highest-rated assisted living communities in Louisville.
  • Amenities: The number and type of amenities can vary substantially from one assisted living facility to the next. We tried to find communities that offer amenities seniors want and need to enjoy a better quality of life.
  • Location: Many senior living communities in Louisville are far from the city center, but we tried to find communities that are close to shopping, medical centers, parks, and other points of interest.
  • Staff size: We highlighted assisted living communities that offer a high staff-to-resident ratio, often with a maximum of eight residents per caregiver.

What Is Living in Louisville Like for Seniors?

Louisville is a fun city for people of all ages, but it’s a particularly good fit for seniors. Below is a quick look at what life is like for older adults in Louisville.

  • Climate: Louisville’s climate is often referred to as “moist continental,” since it is humid year-round, with hot summers and relatively mild winters. The city gets snow most winters, but it has pretty comfortable temperatures throughout most of the year and may be a welcome change for seniors coming from colder cities.
  • Health care: Louisville is known for its quality health-care system. The city boasts multiple hospitals and dozens of clinics, and several Norton Healthcare facilities in the area are among the highest-rated in the state.
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Louisville is about 4 percent lower than the national average. Assisted living tends to be more affordable in Louisville, but things such as housing, groceries, and utilities may be higher than in many other cities in Kentucky.
  • Walkability: Downtown Louisville and the surrounding neighborhoods are relatively walkable, but a car or public transportation is typically required for people living outside the city center.
  • Activities: The city has a lot of fun things to do for seniors, including museums, historical sites, horse races (including the Kentucky Derby), public parks, and college sporting events.
  • Safety: Louisville has a high crime rate compared to the rest of Kentucky, but safety and crime vary substantially by neighborhood.
  • Tax structure: Kentucky has a 5 percent state income tax, in addition to inheritance tax and estate tax, making it an expensive place to settle for retirees and their beneficiaries.4 That could have a negative impact on estate planning.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Louisville, Kentucky?

The projected median cost of assisted living in Louisville is $3,825 per month in 2024, according to Genworth. That makes it about 28.5 percent lower than the national median of $4,917. 5

Despite various state taxes that could put a damper on retirement and estate planning, seniors in Louisville can enjoy very affordable assisted living communities. That said, the costs can vary a lot based on the provider and the type of care you need. Memory care, for example, is more expensive than assisted living care in Louisville and most other locations. Luckily, there is a wide range of options in Louisville, so you can find one that’s right for your budget.
