How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Austin

With a lot of great options to choose from, it can be difficult to narrow down the best assisted living communities in Austin. To ensure we covered all the most important factors, we focused our research on the following criteria:

  • Cost: Since many older adults live on fixed incomes, the cost of assisted living is a major factor to consider. There are a lot of variables that can make assisted living more or less expensive, but we focused our attention on the communities that didn’t greatly exceed the city’s average cost of assisted living and also offered good value.
  • Available care: It’s nice to find a community that can offer different kinds of care as you age. Most of the assisted living communities on our list include additional living or care options, such as independent living and memory care. You may not need those things now, but it’s nice to know they’re available if the need arises.
  • Reviews: Reviews are essential for determining what actual residents and their families think about each community. We go through a wide range of reviews to see what people say about their experiences.
  • Amenities: Assisted living isn’t just about helping with daily tasks; it’s also about creating a fun and relaxing environment. We evaluate both the quality and quantity of amenities offered in each community.
  • Location: Location is an important factor to consider, particularly for older adults who like to get out and explore their surroundings. Certain locations may also be more or less convenient for visiting family members and friends.
  • Staff size: We focus our attention on assisted living communities that offer high staff-to-resident ratios, often with a maximum of eight residents per staff member.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

Even though we’ve done a lot of research on your behalf regarding the best assisted living communities in Austin, you’ll still need to find the perfect fit for you. While evaluating your options, try the following tips:

  • Identify your needs: Do you need extensive help with things such as bathing, eating, and getting dressed? Are you finding it increasingly challenging to remember to take your medication? Do you still feel relatively independent, but like the idea of having staff and medical professionals nearby? Think about your current and future needs, and determine which facilities can adequately attend to them.
  • Review your budget: The cost of assisted living can vary substantially by location, amenities offered, and the facility’s style and size. Think about how much you can reasonably afford to pay on a month-to-month basis. Remember that Medicare and Medicaid usually don’t cover assisted living, so you’ll likely depend on Social Security benefits, retirement savings, long-term care insurance, or a combination of the three.
  • Read reviews: Don’t just take our word for it! Even if an assisted living community sounds great based on our analysis, you should still read personal reviews to get a better understanding of a community’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Visit communities: Always visit a community before moving in. Visiting in person allows you to ask residents and staff about their experiences, and gives you a first-hand look at what life would be like there.
  • Check licensing and certifications: While researching or visiting a community, check that it has up-to-date licensing and certifications to operate in Texas.
  • Trust your gut: If you find yourself at an impasse with a few communities and you’re not sure what to do, listen to your gut. Many assisted living communities offer similar services and amenities, which can make it difficult to determine which is best. If your instincts tell you one may be a better fit for you, it’s probably the right choice!

What Is Living in Austin Like for Seniors?

Austin may have a younger population than other cities in Texas, but it’s still a great place to live for older adults. Whether Austin is right for you will ultimately come down to your needs and personal preferences. Here are a few important factors to consider before settling down in Austin:

  • Climate: Austin has a humid, subtropical climate, with hot summers and relatively mild winters. That may be ideal for seniors who enjoy warmer weather, but it’s important to remember that it may not always be safe or advisable to spend a lot of time outdoors when summer temperatures reach their peak.
  • Health care: Austin has a very strong health-care system, with multiple clinics specifically for seniors. Three hospitals in Austin have been ranked among the best health-care providers in the nation.2
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Austin is a bit higher than the national average, and it is typically more expensive to live there than in nearby cities such as Houston and San Antonio. It’s a good idea to look over your budget and make sure you can afford to live comfortably before moving to Austin.
  • Walkability: Austin is pretty spread out, but various neighborhoods throughout the city, particularly in Central Austin, are very walkable. The city also offers public buses and trains to help get you where you’re going.
  • Activities: Austin has a lot of natural, commercial, and cultural attractions for seniors, including farmers’ markets, parks, nature reserves, museums, and theaters.
  • Safety: Austin is generally a safe place to live, but crime rates vary by neighborhood. Some neighborhoods see higher crime rates than the national average.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Austin, Texas?

According to Genworth, the estimated median cost of an assisted living community in Austin is $5,841 per month (as of 2024). That’s around 15.8 percent higher than the estimated national median of $4,971.3

Despite the city median, you will still see substantial differences in the costs of each assisted living community in Austin. The differences are often due to the type of accommodations, amenities, and kinds of care offered. You can also expect to pay more based on the level of care you need. Memory care services, for example, can often cause your monthly fee to increase by as much as $1,000. Some communities, however, allow you to customize your accommodations and care options to suit your budget.
