If you want to maintain a full and active lifestyle as you age, exercise will be a key component. It can improve your health and wellness, and, if done right, it can help keep your mind and body strong. You may not need a personal trainer either. Exercise apps installed on your mobile phone can help you stay on track with your daily exercise routine.
The thing about exercise apps, however, is that many of them require a subscription or cost money to download. It’s not easy to find the best fit for yourself, since not all apps cater to the various physical activity levels of aging adults. That’s where we come in. We scoured the app stores on Android and iPhone to test, rank and compare the best exercise apps for seniors. Here are our top recommendations.
Daily Yoga
Price: Free to download; $20.99 per month or $49.99 to $69.99 per year to use
Downward dog anyone? Daily Yoga is an app that lets you do over 500 yoga routines based on your skill level. We recommend it because it has gentle yoga routines for aging adults, including chair yoga. For seniors with joint issues, yoga can be a particularly beneficial exercise. It’s a low-impact exercise that can improve flexibility and balance, which can reduce falls and increase mobility so you can continue to do the things you enjoy.

In addition to offering your choice of beginner to advanced yoga routines, we like that the app has meditation and relaxation sessions. They can lower stress and anxiety levels and help manage mental health. That means Daily Yoga isn’t just for physical activities; it’s also good for mental and emotional health.
The app features progress tracking, such as getting badges for checking in and completing classes, so older adults can see their improvement and use it as motivation to keep going. It also has a community feature to help you get connected with others and grow your social circle and support network.
The downside of the Daily Yoga app is that it requires a subscription. We recommend the $49.99 Standard membership. It breaks down to a little over $4 a month, which is far more affordable than the monthly membership ($20.99). If you want to do more advanced routines, however, the $69.99 Master membership is also a good choice.
Did You Know? Women can exercise less often than men, but have more cardiovascular gains, according to new findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).1
SilverSneakers Go
Price: Free through Medicare Advantage plans
Aging adults looking to improve flexibility, strength and balance will like the senior-focused SilverSneakers Go app, which has a simple interface and easy-to-follow instructions. It has more than 200 workout videos and live online classes of all types of exercises that can help reduce the chances of falls and increase overall mobility. It also has guided workouts, fitness programs and a location finder for workout classes. The class locator feature allows you to find classes in your location for group workouts with other older adults, which can enhance emotional well-being.
We like that the app lets you customize your workout program and have personalized plans and exercise schedules. The ability to track your progress helps you stay on track and motivated and feel a sense of accomplishment. The app also contains health and wellness resources, tips to stay healthy and active, and mobile reminders to keep you on track.
SilverSneakers Go is typically included in Medicare Advantage plans, which means you can use it for free if your insurance plan covers it. If you don’t have coverage, you can still download it for free and use some free content, such as basic workout programs and some exercise videos, but not the full range of features. Apps such as FitOn or 7 Minute Workout, which you’ll read about below, offer a wide range of free content for older adults.

MapMyWalk
Price: $5.99 monthly subscription, $29.99 yearly
If you enjoy daily strolls, MapMyWalk can track your distance, pace and calories burned. The app also marks your daily walking route in red and provides audio feedback. Walking is a great form of exercise because it can strengthen your muscles, boost your cardiovascular health and improve your mental wellness, which can all help you age in place. If you have arthritis or joint issues, walking can be an especially good exercise option.
The app also lets you map out your walking route in advance or choose new routes and set goals for distance. We also like that it has safety features. It lets you share your location with family, friends and caregivers, for example, so they always know where you are. The best part is that the app works with smartwatches and other fitness tracking devices. Not-so-tech-savvy individuals will not find the interface difficult to use at all.
>> Recommendations: The Best Smartwatches for Seniors
Note that apps such as Daily Yoga and MapMyWalk have a specific focus — namely yoga and walking — so they may not be the best apps for you if you’re looking for a wide range of workouts. You should consider apps such as FitOn and Sworkit discussed below. Sworkit, for example, offers customizable workout plans for strength, cardio and flexibility.
Did You Know? A new study found that seniors ages 85 or over who walked weekly for at least one hour had a lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease than seniors who did not participate in physical activity.2
FitOn
Price: Free
FitOn offers a range of exercise routines, and it can be customized for older adults. The exercises include yoga, Pilates, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), cardio, Barre and strength training. They’re great exercises to improve flexibility, balance, mental health, stress reduction, endurance, muscle tone and mood enhancement.
You can choose your exercise intensity and duration, and those with chronic conditions or mobility issues can modify their exercises. Plus it has classes led by celebrity trainers, as well as workouts by Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and more. The app has guided meditations to promote calmness and reduce stress and anxiety and improve breathing and relaxation for better sleep. It also features real-time messaging and a live leaderboard, which can help you keep track of your progress and stay motivated to work out.
FitOn has a social feature to connect with friends and family. The app is free, but you can pay for the premium option, which offers extra features such as custom meal plans and offline access. The app isn’t tailored specifically to older adults though. It’s definitely a useful exercise app, but we found that the large range of workouts can be overwhelming.
7 Minute Workout
Price: Free
When time is a factor but you want to get a workout in, the 7 Minute Workout app is for you. It has daily HIIT exercises and offers quick and simple workout routines that don’t require special equipment. You can also choose low-impact exercise routines.
The downside is that the app does not feature customized workouts. Instead, it offers HIIT that includes 12 high-intensity body-weight exercises, each done for 30 seconds with 10-second rest periods. The exercises provide a good cardio workout and strengthen muscles. Resistance training can increase strength and muscle mass.
Since this exercise is more intense, you should consult with your doctor before starting. Older adults with severe mobility issues, heart conditions or respiratory conditions such as pneumonia may find the exercise too demanding. Beginners may want to opt for a low-intensity, low-impact routine before progressing to this type of workout.
Did You Know? Seniors ages 85 or older gained relatively more strength and muscle mass doing resistance training compared with people in their 60s and 70s, according to a new study in Human Kinetics Journals.3
Sworkit
Price: Free to download; $9.99 monthly or $59.99 yearly to use
Aging adults looking for cardio, strength, yoga or stretching routines can use Sworkit to customize their routines. That includes low-impact routines best suited for older adults. There are more than 900 exercises and 400 workouts to choose from — the most of all the apps on this list — and you can follow along with guided workouts by instructors.
Unlike 7 Minute Workout, Sworkit is customizable and flexible. You can set up your workout based on your fitness level and goals, and determine the duration. You can choose low-impact workouts such as yoga, and you don’t need gym equipment to do any of the exercises. Plus, you can connect with certified trainers for fitness tips and advice. Sworkit does not have any social features, and it requires more initial setup to customize workouts, which may be challenging for some older adults.
Chair One Fitness
Price: $19.99 monthly, $120.99 yearly
Older adults looking for seated exercises have a lot to choose from with the senior-specific Chair One Fitness app. Chair-based routines feature low- and high-intensity workouts, ranging from dance to incorporating activities of daily living, and they’re set to music. The exercises are good for people with mobility issues, chronic issues and difficulty with balance. They are designed to increase flexibility, strength and fitness, and the app offers new monthly workouts to keep exercise routines fresh and fun. The user interface is easy to use, with instructions and simple navigation.
FitOn, for comparison, is not senior-specific, but it offers exercises for older adults with a much broader range of exercises. FitOn has more health resources, which could be beneficial for seniors looking for exercise-specific information for their particular health condition.
Our Methodology: How We Selected the Best Exercise Apps for Seniors
We know older adults like to enjoy an active lifestyle that includes regular exercise, so we spent hours compiling a list of the best exercise apps for seniors. We reviewed the top exercise apps that can give older adults the best workout based on their needs and preferences. Here are some of the criteria we looked at:
Popularity
We scoured the app stores to find the most popular fitness apps for seniors. We also looked at apps that offered the most physical and mental benefit for seniors, such as those that involved yoga and meditation, high- and low-impact exercises, and customizable workout programs.
Cost
We looked at the costs of exercise apps. We included some that are free, but many require a fee or a subscription. Many of the free apps come with ads, but for an additional fee you can have ad-free service. Some also include in-app purchases to enhance the experience.
Usability
Exercise apps come in a variety of interfaces, and user-friendliness was a major criteria when selecting different fitness apps that can suit senior tech skills.
Social Interaction
We looked for exercise apps that offer social features that keep you connected with friends and family and allow you to make new friends. The features include joining chats and online communities to enhance social interaction.
Educational Value
Some exercise apps contain educational features on the importance of good nutrition, wellness and exercise, and many also contain progress-tracking features.
Pace of Exercise
Older adults have varying endurance levels, so we chose exercise apps that suit all skill levels and preferences.
