The eHarmony dating site was started by a psychologist almost 25 years ago. The well-known dating platform is for people ages 18 and older, but it’s also popular with seniors. Other sites also use personality tests and algorithms to match users, but eHarmony’s comprehensive questionnaire covers many more areas.
Anonymous single members of the SeniorLiving.org team tested eHarmony to learn the ins and outs for older adults. We began by testing the site with a free Basic membership, and we then upgraded to Premium to unlock more features. We’ll share our experience with eHarmony below so you can decide if it’s the right fit for you.
eHarmony Pros
- Most comprehensive compatibility quiz, with excellent analysis
- No. 1 most trusted dating site
- Attracts serious daters
- Low rate of scams and fake profiles
eHarmony Cons
- Very expensive
- Lengthy sign-up process
- Lengthy contracts
- Not inclusive (you can only be a man or a woman searching for a man or a woman)
Our Experience Using eHarmony
Sign-up Process and Completing the Questionnaire
This dating site appeals to serious daters. It’s costly, but it has many excellent features and an easy-to-navigate interface. The sign-up process took longer than it did with other sites, such as SilverSingles — primarily due to the lengthy questionnaire (it took most of us 20 to 25 minutes to fill out). The volume of questions may deter some people, but it’s great to know you’ll be well matched once you get through it.
Later, we could view our matches’ scores and read a compatibility analysis about both people’s scores in these areas: personality fundamentals, relationship behavior, everyday life, and communication style. That’s a more in-depth look at compatibility than the other dating sites we’ve tested, including Zoosk, SilverSingles, and OurTime.
Setting Up Our Profile and Viewing Profiles
Setting up our profile and uploading photos was quick and easy. We were then able to quickly view potential romantic partners and determine our compatibility. Notifications told us when someone liked us too.
Pro Tip: Match is the most popular dating platform with older adults, but eHarmony is the second-most popular.1
eHarmony’s Basic membership is free, and you don’t need to give credit card information. With a Basic plan, we could read profiles (with blurred-out photos) and browse matches. We could also send and receive likes, but not communicate with full messages. Like most sites, Premium membership unlocks many features and better enables you to interact with others.
When we searched, we appreciated that you could view each person’s height, age, and preferences regarding children. You can’t, however, filter by education, religion, income, or other features. Another limitation with the Basic membership: Matches you receive default to your state rather than your city.
eHarmony Features
With a Basic membership, you’ll see a very clean layout, which we really liked. You’ll also be able to search using Discover. Here’s what you’ll find:
With a Premium subscription, you’ll be able to view profile photos and send as many messages as you like. We also found it helpful to have access to more filters — especially related to distance — to sort through matches. With the Basic membership, you can only see profiles in your state and you can’t narrow down the search any further. We also wanted to see who viewed us, which you can do only with a Premium membership.
Below is a quick look at everything the Premium membership offers.
When we went to Tour (in the top-right corner of the website), we found two categories: Dating Advice and Press and Research. Those resources are available to Basic and Premium members. We found a huge number of helpful articles offering guidelines and pointers about dating in the Dating Advice section.
We also liked reading about the interesting trends and research under Press and Research.
eHarmony Pricing
eHarmony is the most expensive dating site to join, but it’s great for people who want serious relationships because the site attracts serious daters. eHarmony claims that someone finds love on the site every 14 minutes.
eHarmony offers six-, 12-, and 24-month memberships. Like most other dating sites, including SilverSingles, the longer you sign up for, the lower the cost per month. Here’s a breakdown of the costs:
- Six months: $74.90 per month
- 12 months: $54.90 per month
- 24 months: $44.90 per month
Pro Tip: Interestingly, 23 percent of adults in their 50s have used online dating platforms, compared to 14 percent of those in their 60s and 12 percent of those ages 70 or
The site offers a free three-day trial, and they also have sales often. We clicked the box offering 60 percent off a Premium membership before the offer expired, but it brought us to the 35 percent off page pictured below. We were disappointed not to receive the bigger discount, but we were glad to access the robust features of the site at a reduced price. (Note that these discounts vary throughout the year and may not always be available.)
The only difference between eHarmony’s premium offers is the length of the membership. Unlike other sites, you don’t gain access to more features by choosing a more expensive level.
Pro Tip: Sometimes when you sign up for dating sites, your bank will flag it as fraud. That happened to us on multiple occasions using different dating sites with different price points. The banks usually then text or email asking you to confirm it was indeed you. Once you answer yes, they say to try signing up again.
Safety and Privacy
eHarmony is the most trusted dating app, according to a 2022 survey of more than 1,000 respondents in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. Their Trust and Safety team claims to work 24/7 and is dedicated to protecting their members. They prevent scammers, bots, and so-called bad actors from accessing profiles on their platform.
Pro Tip: Many scammers target seniors through dating apps, so it’s critical to stay safe online. Identity theft protection software is just one of the many ways you can stay safe while browsing and using dating sites. Visit our guide to the best identity theft protection for more information.
The site has rules in place to protect privacy and encourage safety. All photos get checked before they’re published, for example, and eHarmony uses SMS verification to confirm members’ identities via text. You can also remove a contact whenever you want, which prevents the person from seeing your profile and messaging you. You can also report anyone who makes you feel unsafe directly to the Trust and Safety team.
eHarmony Reviews and Testimonials
Under Success Stories on its website, eHarmony claims that 2 million people have met and fallen in love thanks to the site. They also feature many happy couples and their testimonials.
Most complaints about the company to the Better Business Bureau talked about an inability to reach customer service and speak to a real person, the lack of success in meeting people, scammers on the site, the high cost, and a lack of choices in their area.
Thanks to local consumer-protection laws, residents of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin can cancel their eHarmony subscriptions within three days of purchase. It’s not easy to do on the website, though, and some complaints were about difficulty canceling memberships.
FYI: More than 2 million people in over 125 countries have fallen in love using eHarmony, according to the company’s promotions.
How to Cancel an eHarmony Subscription
If you decide eHarmony isn’t right for you, you can cancel your membership at any point. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the process:
- Log in to your account.
- Tap your profile at the top of the screen.
- Open the drop-down menu and click “Data & Settings.”
- Click “Cancel Auto Renewal.”
- Follow the instructions to cancel.
Remember that uninstalling the app won’t cancel your membership.
eHarmony vs. Other Dating Apps for Older Adults
Unlike other dating sites we’ve tested, including SilverSingles and OurTime, that are designed specifically for older adults, eHarmony is available to users of all ages. We found that there are still plenty of seniors using the site though. eHarmony is the most expensive dating site we’ve reviewed. It also has the most extensive questionnaire and matching process we’ve seen, however, so it may result in better matches. We also appreciate eHarmony’s long-term experience in the industry, as it was founded in 2000.
Below is a chart comparing eHarmony and SilverSingles, another popular dating site for seniors, to give you a closer look at how they rank.
Features | eHarmony | SilverSingles |
---|---|---|
Staring price | $44.90 per month with a 24-month membership | $24.95 per month with a 12-month membership |
Target age | 18 and older | 50 and older |
Matching tool | Robust compatibility system | Personality test |
Safety | Minimal scams and fake profiles | Slightly more scams and fake profiles |
Final Thoughts on eHarmony
The bottom line is that eHarmony isn’t cheap, but if you’re tired of swiping and scrolling dating sites filled with fake profiles, it may be perfect for you. It requires a bigger investment, but eHarmony is popular among seniors searching for “the one” for a reason. The initial questionnaire is lengthy, but research has shown that compatibility is a good basis for successful relationships. And success stories abound on eHarmony, with over 2 million romantic success stories coming from the site.
