Your first step toward figuring out which company may make the best hearing aids for you is determining what you need from the devices, with the help of an audiologist or hearing health professional if necessary. ReSound and Signia are two popular prescription hearing aid brands. Each company offers a variety of hearing aid styles to suit just about any degree of hearing loss.

For this review, our tech experts spent 100 hours researching and comparing both brands. We also consulted with our resident audiologist, Dr. Ruth Reisman, for her opinions and to learn about her patients’ experiences with the brands. Let’s see how they measure up to each other and the rest of the industry.

ReSound and Signia are both leading hearing aid brands, but they differ in key features and technology focus. ReSound, known for its natural sound quality, emphasizes seamless connectivity with Apple and Android devices through its Bluetooth integrations and the ReSound Smart 3D app. They are currently the industry leader in implementing Bluetooth Low Energy and Auracast connectivity features. It often appeals to users looking for user-friendly customization and remote care options. Signia stands out for its advanced signal processing and unique features such as own voice processing (OVP), which makes the user’s voice sound more natural, and notched therapy to treat tonal tinnitus. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your specific hearing needs, preferences and lifestyle.

ReSound vs. Signia: What’s the Difference?

Both ReSound and Signia offer a variety of styles of high-quality, technologically advanced hearing aids for people with mild to profound hearing loss. They have hearing aids with either disposable or rechargeable batteries. In 2019, the company that makes Signia hearing aids, Sivantos, merged with Widex to form WS Audiology. In general, Signia is a good option if your priorities are discreet design (their award-winning Styletto style is particularly elegant and sleek) and excellent speech clarity.

Testing out ReSound BTE hearing aids

ReSound, part of GN Group, an audio services company based in Denmark, has been making hearing aids since 1943, when it was known as Danavox.1 ReSound stands out for their device compatibility with Auracast, which provides seamless connectivity to Bluetooth devices today and also means their hearing aids contain the software that will enable them to take advantage of future advances in audio streaming technology as well.

ReSound’s hearing aids come in the following forms: invisible-in-canal (IIC), in-the-canal (ITC), in-the-ear (ITE), receiver-behind-the-ear (BTE) and receiver-in-the-ear (RIE). The company’s organic hearing technology makes hearing people easier than ever, and the spatial sense technology makes sounds around you sound clearer and more natural.

Signia is known for developing the world’s first slim receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid that can operate for 24 hours when fully charged. We rated Signia as a top choice for single-sided hearing loss. The brand also has a handful of accompanying phone apps you can use to control your hearing experience by adjusting the settings without visiting a hearing aid professional.

Equipment and Technology

ReSound offers seven lines of hearing aids to suit any hearing and style preference. The company’s great variety of accessories, such as streamers and microphones, enhance user experience and make it easier to connect hearing aids to other devices. Through ReSound’s apps, you can easily customize your experience by controlling the volume of your hearing aid, tracking the battery status and more.

Patients choose ReSound for many reasons, like the natural sound quality and advanced technology. In my practice, the choice for ReSound devices is heavily biased toward individuals with an implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other. Due to their connectivity features, ReSound has the most flexibility to integrate with multiple implants from numerous manufacturers, allowing for seamless bimodal hearing and streaming.

ReSound’s hearing aids are constructed with iSolate Nanotech coating, which prevents humidity, moisture and perspiration from interfering with the functionality of the hearing aid. ReSound’s seven models are the Omnia, Linx Quattro, Nexia, Savi, Enzo Q, Vivia and Key. You can stream audio from smart devices on all models. ReSound hearing aid models — including Nexia, Omnia, Savi and the older One — enable hands-free streaming from iPhones and some iPad models, and they’re also compatible with some Android devices. You can check whether your hearing aids are compatible with your devices by scanning the QR code on ReSound’s compatibility page.

Those sensitive to noise distortion may like the Linx Quattro. It uses the full microphone range, allowing for sounds to be processed without distortion. The ReSound Custom model features a fit like wireless headphones, and they’re personalized to your ears. The Enzo Q is best for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. With this model, customers experience a reported 60 percent improvement in recognizing speech in noisy situations.2

Signia offers a wide variety of models to choose from. The Insio Charge&Go AX is the company’s first custom-fit RIC hearing aid. Made to fit the individual shape of your ear canal, the device looks like an earbud and will give you the clearest hearing experience possible. The Charge&Go AX is the first custom hearing aid with wireless charging and Bluetooth. It is available in ITE and ITC styles.

Expert Insights

Signia is the preferred manufacturer at my practice for a number of reasons, but it is most often selected for its tinnitus treatment options and unique form factors. Additionally, the microphone directionality feature in the Signia app is attractive to patients who want to further control the signal to noise ratio.

A recent addition to Signia’s product lineup is the Integrated Xperience line. Along with the Styletto IX model, the line includes the Signia Active Pro IX model, which features RealTime Conversation Enhancement technology that provides sophisticated processing of sounds in dynamic group conversations.

FYI:

FYI: Comfort is an important factor in hearing aid adherence. South Korean researchers found that two common reasons older adults don’t wear their hearing aids are discomfort and because they found background noise annoying.3 Follow-up appointments with hearing professionals are a crucial part of the process.

A few other noteworthy Signia models include the Pure Charge&Go Nx and Styletto AX. The Pure Charge&Go Nx is designed to be charged overnight while you sleep for a high-quality hearing experience the next day without needing a charge. It’s powered by a lithium-ion battery, which tends to last longer. This model is great for individuals with mild-to-severe hearing loss. The Styletto AX is the smallest behind-the-ear hearing aid Signia carries. It can be easily controlled from your smartphone and is equipped with an advanced speech function which singles out a dominant speaker so you can focus easily on a conversation.

ReSound and Signia Hearing Aid Apps

Users of any Signia hearing aid can get 24/7 sound customization and troubleshooting with the AI-powered Signia Assistant. The Signia Assistant is compatible with iPhone and Android devices and learns your preferences over time through machine learning, which helps the assistant quickly adjust your settings in different environments for a more seamless and empowering hearing experience. Company studies suggest that Signia Assistant helped 93 percent of users feel more confident and in control of their hearing.4

Although Signia previously led in terms of hearing aid app sophistication, ReSound has pretty much caught up with the introduction of their Smart3D app, which enables you to track your battery charge, request assistance from your hearing health professional, find lost hearing aids and manage tinnitus symptoms with the touch of a screen.

Costs and Pricing

ReSound and Signia keep their product prices offline, which means you will have to contact a hearing provider in your area to find out the exact numbers. Your hearing aid professional should also be able to address any questions you may have about any hearing aid.

Need Help Finding the Right Hearing Aid?

Answer a few easy questions to find the hearing aid that’s right for you.

ReSound and Signia vs. the Competition

ReSound and Signia both produce prescription, customizable hearing aids that require a professional hearing evaluation, fitting and follow-up appointments. Although the appointments mean several trips to see a hearing professional, the guidance is invaluable in making sure your hearing aids are comfortable and giving you the hearing experience you want.

Both companies offer excellent audio-streaming capability to both Apple and Android devices, much like Oticon and Widex (remember that Signia and Widex are both owned by WS Audiology), other prescription hearing aid brands we have reviewed.

>> Further Reading: Check out our guide to Widex hearing aid costs to learn more about the brand’s pricing, and see how Widex and Oticon stack up in our head-to-head comparison.

Prescription hearing aids can be much more expensive than over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, but ReSound and Signia devices come in a variety of styles and colors, unlike the MDHearing devices we reviewed, which are available only in beige. We appreciate that ReSound continually improves the design of their hearing aids, making new models smaller and more sophisticated. ReSound’s Enzo Q is one of our top choices for profound hearing loss. The model seamlessly connects to wireless devices, cochlear implants, and bone-anchored hearing aids from Cochlear Americas for a quality hearing experience. For severe to profound hearing loss, we chose Phonak as a good option for prescription hearing aids.

ReSound has been a leader in Auracast-ready device designs, and we also like the ReSound Smart 3D app, which sends alerts when batteries need charging and can also provide relief from tinnitus with adjustable white noise and natural sounds.

In a review of hearing aid brands by Consumer Reports several years ago, the publication noted that there don’t appear to be significant differences between customer-satisfaction rates among the top prescription hearing aids. Signia, however, scored a little higher than ReSound, Oticon and Phonak.6

We agree that there’s a lot to like about Signia’s offerings. In our evaluation of hearing aid brands, we chose Signia as one of the best options for people with tinnitus, noting that the Signia Silk Charge&Go IX comes with built-in tinnitus therapy. Signia’s Integrated Xperience with RealTime Conversation Enhancement Technology makes it much easier to follow conversations in noisy settings, one of our audiologists said. The technology is available in Signia’s Styletto, Silk, Insio and Pure Charge&Go hearing aids.

Our audiologist also appreciates that Signia makes older legacy models available at a lower cost. The company maintains a robust international network of dispensers, so Signia customers can find someone able to fit and adjust their devices wherever they go. For contrast, we liked Beltone hearing aids when we tested them, but their devices can be adjusted only by a Beltone specialist at a Beltone hearing center, whereas Signia (and ReSound) hearing aids can be adjusted by any audiologist trained in each brand’s fitting process.

If you have mild to moderate hearing loss, however, OTC hearing aids may be an option. Eargo’s hearing aids are discreet and can be purchased online. Another OTC hearing aid we rated highly was Jabra Enhance, which starts at around $1,000 a pair. They are rechargeable, have an accompanying app for both iOS and Android, and come with a three-year warranty.

Our Methodology: ReSound vs. Signia

Dr. Reisman can make adjustments to ReSound hearing aids to best suit her patient's needs

Dr. Reisman has experience customizing and prescribing hearing aids from both brands, including ReSound hearing aids pictured here.

Our senior tech experts spent 100 hours researching and testing each company’s hearing aids to help you choose the brand most likely to suit your individual needs and budget. We take careful notes about hearing aids’ comfort and fit, technology, sound quality and customer service, as well as each company’s track record and history of innovation. If a hearing aid company offers an online hearing test, we take it and compare our results with our evaluation from our own audiologists.

Below are more details about our criteria for hearing aid company reviews.

  • Design and durability: Hearing aids use sophisticated technology. Depending on the style of hearing aid, they may need to be handled by wearers on a daily basis. We test hearing aids and research customer reviews to look for suspected issues with a particular device or product line to make sure products we recommend are durable and reliable.
  • Sound quality: Hearing aids are a considerable investment of time and money. We test each company’s models as carefully as possible to ensure that you get the hearing experience you’re looking for. We also research each company’s technology and specs to provide insights about the technical aspects of their devices.
  • Pricing: Many hearing aid companies, including ReSound and Signia, do not publish pricing information on their websites. That’s because their hearing aids are available only with a prescription and through audiologists and hearing professionals, which means costs vary by provider and geographic area. We cross-reference cost information we find online with our personal experience to give readers a price range they can expect with each company.
  • Comfort and ease of use: This is a big one. We consider the process of putting in a company’s hearing aids, adjusting for sound, and cleaning and maintaining each device, as well as how easy they are to wear and use.
  • Bluetooth compatibility: Hearing aids capable of seamlessly streaming audio from multiple devices are becoming increasingly important to hearing aid users, so we research and test each device’s audio compatibility.

The Bottom Line

The best hearing aid for you will depend on many individual factors, including the audiologist or hearing professional you prefer to see, what your insurance covers, your degree of hearing loss and the styles of hearing aids you find most comfortable. Experienced hearing professionals will consider your hearing needs and personal preferences and then suggest devices appropriate for your degree of hearing loss and budget. The good news? ReSound and Signia are both industry leaders, and each is likely to offer a model and style that works for you.

ReSound offers fewer hearing aid options, but each is packed with many practical features to help people hear better. ReSound’s award-winning designs and superior Bluetooth connectivity are two reasons the company is one of the top hearing aid makers both in the U.S. and internationally. ReSound’s apps and accessories make it a breeze for users to customize their experience. With so many different ways to reach their customer-service department, you’ll be sure to have your questions answered if any arise. Read more about ReSound’s products in our full review.

Signia’s expansive line of hearing aid models make it possible for people with all levels of hearing loss to find something that works for them. Drowning out background noise and direct streaming from smart and electronic devices are just two of many practical uses of Signia’s hearing aids. Like ReSound, Signia offers a variety of customer-support avenues so you can get the assistance you need. For more information about Signia’s hearing aid products, read our review.
