Now part of Verizon Communications (as of November 2024), Frontier offers DSL and fiber-optic internet, phone, and TV services to both residential and business customers in 27 states, with a focus on rural areas. Frontier is excellent for older adults who want to stay connected with family, send emails, and watch videos on YouTube. In contrast to Spectrum Internet plans, which start at $49.99 per month (with Auto Pay), Frontier’s internet plans start at $29.99 per month for 12 months, with no contracts or data caps. While some of the basic internet plans from Frontier have lower speeds, high-speed fiber plans are also available.

Our tech experts tested Frontier’s internet plans and evaluated their service for older adults. In this guide, we'll discuss our experience with the brand: speeds, bundles, prices, and other features that make Frontier a top internet provider for older adults.

Frontier offers affordable starting prices, fast speeds, and solid coverage in rural areas. I’d recommend them for those who live in an area with limited internet options or those living outside of large cities.

How Does Frontier Compare?

Frontier internet is a great choice for older adults on a fixed budget, as it has some of the lowest prices around. Currently, however, Frontier only provides internet coverage in 27 states — meaning service might not be available in your area. Pros About Frontier Internet

  • Affordable pricing: Frontier Internet plans start at less than $40 per month with no data caps or overage charges, so you can stay connected without breaking the bank.
  • High-speed internet: Frontier offers plans with a wide selection of speeds, ranging from 9 Mbps to 940 Mbps.
  • Bundles to help you save: If you want to save on multiple products, you can bundle your internet, home phone, and TV service with Frontier.
  • No overages or data caps: Some internet providers will charge extra for going over your monthly data allotment. With Frontier Internet, you can stream content, play games online, download large files, and not worry about data caps or overage fees.
  • Price-lock guarantees: For those who don’t want to deal with constant price hikes and changes, some Frontier Internet plans come with a three-year price lock guarantee.
  • No contracts: Frontier internet plans don’t require a contract, but you’d have to commit to the same monthly pricing for 12 months.

Cons About Frontier Internet

  • Limited availability: With service in only 27 states, Frontier internet has limited availability. For comparison, Spectrum Internet provides coverage in 44 states. However, Frontier Internet still provides high-speed internet access to seniors who live in remote, rural, or other areas with limited connectivity.
  • No senior-specific discounts: Frontier — like many other internet providers — doesn’t offer senior discounts. However, you may qualify for discounted internet through Frontier’s partnership with the Emergency Broadband Benefit.

The Breakdown: Frontier Internet Plans for Seniors

Keep in mind that Frontier plan availability, speeds, and pricing will vary by location.

Plans and Pricing

Frontier Fiber 200 for Light Internet Users

Frontier offers several internet plans geared toward seniors who use the internet for basic tasks such as emailing, browsing the web, or using social media. Frontier Fiber 200 is a great starting point for older adults; plans start at $29.99 for 12 months with speeds up to 200 Mbps. Frontier Fiber 200 is a basic plan that lets you video chat with the grandkids and shop online. However, it won’t provide enough speed to stream movies in HD or play online games.

This plan is best suited for smaller households, as it’s difficult to sustain multiple devices at this speed. Also note that this plan is not available everywhere; in some areas, Frontier internet plans start at 500 Mbps.

Frontier Fiber 1 Gig for Heavy-Duty Internet Users

If you’re looking for higher speeds, like up to 1,000 Mbps, a Frontier Fiber 1 Gig internet plan might be a good upgrade. With those speeds, you can upload large photo files of your grandkids, play games, and stream Netflix on multiple devices. If you have family over, they can stream content on their own devices without slowing down your connection. Frontier FiberOptic plans vary in pricing and speeds, but if you go with Fiber 1 Gig, it costs $74.99 per month for 12 months with Auto Pay and offers speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (which is 1 Gbps). Also, it has no data caps or overage fees. This means that you can use the internet as much as you want without worrying about being billed for going over the data limit. In our area, this plan includes an Amazon eero Wi-Fi Pro 6 router and a $15 discount on a one-year YouTube subscription.

Frontier offers optional Multi-Device Security, which is software that helps protect up to 10 devices from malware, viruses, and phishing scams and keeps your personal information secure online. Since older adults are at high risk of becoming scam victims, I’m a big fan of this feature.

When we tested this package, we experienced average download speeds of nearly 900 Mbps. While this wasn’t as fast as advertised, it was plenty of speed to connect all of our devices simultaneously without issue.

Installation

You can either opt for self-installation or have your internet installed by a professional technician from Frontier. If you decide to self-install, you will need all of your equipment handy and to see if your service has been activated on your Service Ready Date. Once all of that is sorted out, you can read Frontier’s internet equipment self-install guide to get started. If you would rather rely on the expertise of a professional technician, you also have the option of scheduling a free professional installation.

No Contracts

There are no long-term contracts with Frontier internet, but all plans require a 12-month agreement to lock in the best monthly price. (Early termination fees, therefore, might be applied if you cancel service before your first 12 months are up.) For any plan, there’s no agreement or data caps, so you can stream as much content as you like without worrying about extra or hidden fees.

Does Frontier Offer a Senior Internet Discount?

While Frontier doesn’t explicitly offer a senior internet discount, they still have great ongoing promotions, as well as some assistance for low-income families. Low-income households in New York State might be eligible for Frontier’s 200 Mbps fiber internet plan for $19.99 a month or a broadband plan for $14.99, if available.

Alternatively, you might be eligible for discounted internet through the Lifeline discount program. If you qualify, you can get monthly discounts up to $9.25 for phone or internet; currently, Frontier is authorized to offer this discount in 27 states.1

Frontier usually offers ongoing promotions and discounts for new customers. You can visit their website or contact customer service to learn more about internet bundles and other deals for first-time customers.

Is Frontier Available in My Area?

Currently, Frontier provides coverage in 27 states. Since Verizon acquired Frontier Communications in November 2024, the company expanded its reach to bring fiber-optic broadband to more customers nationwide. Verizon expects the combined reach of this merger will allow them to serve customers in 31 states and the District of Columbia.2 Connectivity is still a bit limited. But, the merger should help Frontier provide high-speed internet in more rural communities where other internet and satellite providers might not reach.

You can see if Frontier is available in your area by visiting their website and typing in your address and ZIP code.

Frontier Bundles to Get the Best Deal

In our area, Frontier is offering a $200 Visa Reward card at checkout when you sign up for the Fiber 2 Gig plan. And Frontier typically offers bundles for phone, TV, and internet for ongoing savings. When you bundle, you save more in the long run and receive services for all your communication and entertainment needs from the same provider. We’ll get into some of our favorite Frontier bundles for older adults below. (Packages vary depending on area.)

Frontier Internet + Unlimited Digital Voice Bundle

Are you an older adult who loves streaming your favorite shows on the internet while simultaneously chatting with your friends or family on the phone? Then you might enjoy Frontier Internet + Unlimited Digital Voice. You can add Digital Voice to any internet plan for an additional $25 a month. With unlimited nationwide calling, you can chat with your loved ones for hours without running out of minutes.

Frontier Internet Netflix and Pro Wi-Fi Bundle

This package bundles high-speed internet with a Pro Wi-Fi router (worth hundreds) and a subscription to Netflix Premium. The former provides a smooth streaming experience for Netflix binges throughout your home.

How Does Frontier Compare to Other Internet Providers?

Frontier offers high-speed internet, along with TV and phone bundles in both rural and suburban areas. It’s difficult to nail down which provider might offer the fastest and most reliable internet for you; your connection will depend on where you live and several other factors.

The American Consumer Satisfaction Index, however, concluded that AT&T Fiber scored highest among internet service providers in 2024. But, keep in mind that several other companies were neck and neck in terms of scores. AT&T Fiber received a score of 80, but Verizon Fios was close behind with a 77; CenturyLink Fiber and Frontier Fiber each earned scores of 76.3

If you’re concerned about having a reliable connection, you might want to check out the AT&T Guarantee program. The company says it provides bill discounts when fiber outages last longer than 20 minutes or broadband outages stretch at least an hour (some restrictions, such as the number of towers affected, apply).4

Frontier’s high-speed internet plans rival top competitors in the market, such as the Fiber 1 Gig plan with speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. It’s similar to CenturyLink plans, which offers speeds up to 940 Mbps for $75 per month. Spectrum offers internet with 1 Gbps as well, but it costs $70 for the first year and higher monthly costs thereafter. Like Frontier, Spectrum offers cheaper internet rates ($40 per month) if you bundle two phone lines and Spectrum TV.

Xfinity currently has a similar promotional bundle deal in some areas: $40 internet service for one year if you add a mobile phone line. After 12 months, customers are billed at regular monthly prices, which are $136 and up. Across the board, Xfinity’s internet prices went up significantly in 2024, raising customers’ monthly costs by $20 or more. But Xfinity still offers some low-speed plans with low rates for one year, such as a 300 Mbps plan for $45 a month for 12 months. Xfinity also offers a low-cost Internet Essentials plan for customers who qualify; it provides unlimited data for $15 per month.

Frontier is among the top three internet providers in the U.S. in terms of customer satisfaction. So, you’re likely to find a plan offering reliable internet at competitive prices with no contracts. Additionally, Frontier doesn’t have data caps, so you won’t get hit by overage charges. Plus, your internet access won’t be halted if you use a lot of data.

Our Experience With Frontier Internet

One of our tech experts in Florida had a difficult time getting internet service up and running with Frontier. Technicians came to the house three different times because the internet would go out. Each time they would cite a different cause, which was frustrating. The experience was so unsatisfactory that they ultimately decided to switch to Spectrum instead.

I’ve found that Frontier’s prices periodically go up every few years. I recommend calling and seeing if they can give a discount. They typically give some sort of rebate or bill credit for a few months to help.

Another of our tech experts, however, had a very different experience. They saw a 1 Gig internet plan online for a cheaper price than what the representative on the phone had offered ($74.99 per month). The rep then immediately pivoted and gave our reviewer an internet plan at the lower price. The representative they spoke with was kind and friendly, and their internet fees haven’t gone up in four years. Plus, in their experience, Frontier internet service has been very reliable. Outages in their area seem to happen frequently with other, more expensive internet providers — but not with Frontier service.

Our tech expert had to move their installation date a few times, and Frontier was easy to work with in that regard. The technician who came to the house was very helpful and self-sufficient. He also taught them how to use the eero app, and they haven’t needed any troubleshooting assistance since then. Our tech experts are big fans of this mobile app. Users can easily check speeds, equipment status, contact customer service, and more.

Reviews of Frontier Internet

Online reviews of Frontier’s internet service are mixed; some customers note good service and courteous employees, while others log complaints. Some rural subscribers expressed dissatisfaction, saying their connections are poor and service is expensive for what they get. Others say they had a better experience with Frontier when compared with Spectrum. Also keep in mind that older reviews might be irrelevant — Verizon acquired Frontier so service and customer service might be a little different. Overall, customers were pleased with Frontier’s bundle options and variety of plans.

Our Methodology: How We Tested and Reviewed Frontier

Our senior tech experts spent over 50 hours researching, comparing, and reviewing Frontier. Our testing process included analyzing Frontier’s internet plans, costs, download speeds, data, service reliability, and customer service. Below are more details about the metrics we used to evaluate Frontier internet:

  • User experience: We did a deep dive into Frontier’s website. We gauged how easy it is to check Frontier’s availability and whether pricing, plan, bundle details, and fineprint details are straightforward.
  • Ordering and installation: When we review internet services, we note each stage of the ordering process. This includes equipment delivery times and the length of time it takes to set up an installation appointment. We also evaluate how smooth the installation process is and whether company representatives are prompt, helpful, and courteous.
  • Technology: We tested for reliable connectivity and speeds. We looked at speed and latency test results using third-party testing data and compared results against competitors.
  • Customer service: We spoke with customer service representatives via phone and email. We made notes about how quickly and professionally they were able to resolve issues.

The Bottom Line on Frontier

Although Frontier is less widely available and slightly more expensive than other companies, this provider is a solid choice if you live in a rural area and need a reliable connection. We appreciate that Frontier is transparent, with no long-term contracts, hidden fees, or data caps. The company offers several internet plans to choose from, with speeds ranging from 200 Mbps up to 5,000 Mbps, making it easy for seniors to connect with loved ones. With plans starting at $29.99 per month, Frontier is an excellent option for older adults who might not be heavy internet users but still need the internet to stay connected with loved ones.
